Golden Solomon's Seal
Under the giant oak tree, my shade garden is packed with Polygonum odoratum variegatum. Some species of this genus have medicinal properties, while others have edible shoots and roots. If eaten, however, these graceful, arching plants with their hidden, dangling, white tubular flowers would be sorely missed—they are so lovely. They spread slowly and turn a gorgeous golden yellow in autumn as seen in my pastel drawing. But, they turn many more colors than yellow. The soft icy blue and lavender were a surprise, which I discovered upon close examination...not to mention the crawling ants!
